Sunday Prek and Up

Shalom School teaches both Hebrew and Judaic studies. Hebrew is taught from preK through seventh grade and includes liturgy and synagogue skills. Our Judaic studies curriculum through grade six includes Bible, Israel, prayer, history, holidays, tzedakah, contemporary Jewish issues, Jewish current events, ethics and values, and life cycle events. Consistent with the ages and developmental levels of children, some of these areas are covered with different emphasis and intensity each year, while others are assigned only to certain grades. Music and Art are integrated into the program at all grade levels. Learning is most effective when students take charge of their own experiences and that's why a lot of our teaching is done with the Project Base learning approach.

Shalom School has been chosen to pilot the Hebrew Wizards program. This program intermingles the spirit of summer camp and the fun of Color War games with the concrete learning of Hebrew school. The approach is engaging and innovative.

Our Middle School and High School students (grades seven through ten) study two Sunday a month, and many of our CMI students prepare for Confirmation at Congregations Mickve Israel. Our students take courses in Bible, Jewish history, law, philosophy and ethics, comparative religion, Jewish community life, Jewish current events, Judaism and ecology, and other topics. Field trips, including visits to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and Jewish sites in the south, are integrated into the program.

You can check our curriculum pages for more informations on your child's grade and to find the major subjects established by our School Board that he or she will be learning this year at Shalom School.

Hebrew School - Wednesday grades 3rd-6th

In 3rd – 6th grade, students will build on existing skills and knowledge and dive deeper into Jewish learning.

 Students will:

Continue developing Hebrew language skills and strengthening reading abilities.

Use new Hebrew skills to learn our prayers and engage in their meaning.

Lead younger students in t’filah as they grow as role models in our community.

Learn Kabbalat Shabbat, and Shabbat morning services in preparation of their B’nei Mitzvah.

Madrichim Program (8th grade & up)

The Madrichim Program gives students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to be teaching assistants in Shalom School classes. By participating in the Madrich program, your child will be trained and will progressively take an active role as an educator in the classroom. Such training and experience will be valuable assets for your teenager’s college application and resume and could help in securing a teaching position in a Hebrew Sunday school should they desire one when they are in college.

Students can count their hours in community service or could choose to get compensated for their work (after the first year).
